Witching and Bitching – a devilishly funny horror film
Directed by: Álex de la Iglesia
Starring: Hugo Silva, Mario Casas, Carolina Bang, and Carmen Maura
Jose (Silva) and Tony (Casas) pull a jewelry heist with the aid of Jose’s son Sergio (Gabriel Ángel Delgado). Their escape plan goes awry though, and they are forced to take hostages and flea for Paris. On their way, they stop in a small town for food unaware that the town is run by a coven of witches who’s annual ritual is about to make them the main course.
Álex de la Iglesia (The Oxford Murders, The Last Circus) is back with his unique style and he is in fine form. “Witching and Bitching” is a rare perfect blend of comedy and horror. The heist scene in the beginning is hilarious and sets the tone for the dark as night humor used through the entire film. It was great to see an opening scene hit the floor running and immediately have you itching to see where the characters are going and what they will encounter. Great film making!
The entire cast is excellent. Hugo Silva does a great job balancing a role that blends being a criminal, father, and pissed off ex husband. Carolina Bang is perhaps the sexiest witch ever to appear on film. It was also nice to see Pedro Almodovar favorite Carmen Maura in a fun role as the coven leader Graciana. All of the supporting characters and subplots work and add to the playful yet pitch black vibe of the movie.
The effects are good. The story is a kick in the pants. The ending is insane. What more could you want? Oh… did I mention it is on Netflix streaming (which I am sure you all have), so go watch it. Just make sure the kids are in bed.
