Netflix recommendation: From the Dark
Written by: Demian Fox and Conor McMahon
Directed by: Conor McMahon
In Conor McMahon’s indie vampire flick “From the Dark”, we are introduced to young couple Mark (Cromwell) and Sarah (Algar) traveling through the picturesque Irish countryside on their way to a weekend getaway. Well, as luck would have it, at the same time (and in the same countryside) an old farmer accidentally unearths an ancient, vampire(ish) creature from it’s muddy grave. When Mark, like most men, ignores his girlfriend’s advice to listen to her gps and not take back roads they end up stranded right next to… that’s right… The old man’s farm.
Okay, so the setup is a bit… no really familiar feeling. Young couple, car problems, no cell service, you get the idea. But, that is where McMahon’s film goes from run of the mill to something fresh and quite enjoyable. Mark and Sarah soon realize they are being hunted, and the fight for survival is on. The Irish landscape lends a perfect canvas for the movies picture to be painted. Every second of the final two thirds of the movie is tense and uncomfortable (in a good way). You get the sense that there is constant danger lurking just off screen, and coupled with some fun jump scares and more than a few “Did you see that in the background?!” moments makes “From the Dark” a film blanketed in eeriness.
I won’t go any further into the plot, because it is somewhat secondary to the atmosphere of the film. Not that the story is weak. It is fine, but the setting and isolation are what made watching this movie a blast for me. That and Niamh Algar’s performance as Sarah. In a wonderful and growing trend of bad ass, female horror film heroes Sarah is right up there. She goes from sweet and sarcastic girlfriend to vampire slaying, “Hear me roar!” heroine. It was a tough role to be sure and Algar nailed it!
“From the Dark” is not a perfect film, but it is original, entertaining, and fun (in a scary way of course). It is also currently on Netflix and Amazon streaming. So, if you are looking for something to go with your popcorn, check out “From the Dark”.
