Sex is one of he more diverse elements of the human experience. Sexual desire is encoded into our biology, and has at least some measure of influence on most of our thoughts and many of our actions. It can be equally beautiful and dangerous. That duality is the central theme of Amat Escalante’s new film “The Untamed”. Choosing to portray human lust as a slimy squid-like alien, Escalante focuses his tale on the destructive power of desire.

Ale (Ruth Ramos) is frustrated with her life. Her husband Angel is at the root of her unhappiness. Their lovemaking is dull and lacks intimacy, Angel seemingly wants little to do with their two children, and unbeknownst to Ale he is having an affair with her gay brother (Eden Villavicencio).

When a strange woman named Veronica (Simone Bucio) enters their lives, promising sexual bliss, things go from bad to much, much worse and the alien creature that resides in an isolated country cabin, and is supposed to bring pleasure, begins to sway more towards it’s instinct to inflict pain. Blending sci-fi, sexual horror with a powerful family drama pays off big for Escalante, who took a giant risk making such a shocking and salacious film after earning such high critical praise for his last film “Heli”.

The technical aspects of “The Untamed” are flawless. It is beautifully shot, brilliantly edited, and boasts one of the eerier scores of any film this year. Escalante is known for leading with raw, emotional scenes and following them up with quick shocks to the system, and that is certainly true here. There is some unforgettable imagery on display in “The Untamed” that I am sure will be talked about for years to come. Even aside from the shock factor, this movie is an impressive feat from a director who is impossible to ignore.
